NASHVILLE, TN (Oct. 26) - Freshman quarterback Jay Cutler scored on a seven-yard run with 1:14 left to play to lead Vanderbilt to a 28-24 college football victory over the University of Connecticut on Saturday Connecticut drops to 2-6 on the season while Vanderbilt improves to an identical 2-6.
Cutler was 11-18 in the air for 171 yard and one touchdown and also rushed the ball 15 times for 54 yards. Vanderbilt's Kwain Doster was the game's leading rusher with 24 carries for 109 yards.
UConn was led by Terry Caulley with 19 carries for 95 yards and two touchdowns while Dan Orlovsky was 23 of 35 for 236 yards and one touchdown. Connecticut led 10-7 at halftime as Caulley scored on an eight-yard run with 7:22 left in the first quarter and Mark Hickok connected on a 44-yard field goal with 47 seconds left in the half. Vanderbilt's only score of the first half was a three-yard touchdown run by Bara Cola with 4:39 left in the second quarter.
Vanderbilt scored the only pts of the third quarter on a 13-yard touchdown run by Cutler with 8:36 left in the period. UConn took a 17-14 lead with 12:40 left in the game on a eight-yard td run by Caulley but Vanderbilt took the lead back 21-17 on a six-yard touchdown pass to M.J. Garrett with 9:48 left to go.
UConn took the lead once again on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Orlovsky to Collins with 6:56 left before Vanderbilt scored the winning touchdown on their next possession.
UConn returns to action next Saturday when the play host to Florida Atlantic at 12 p.m. The game will be televised live on WFSB Channel 3.
