Huskies Down Fairfield, 3-1

STORRS, CT (Oct. 18) - The University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team defeated in-state rival Fairfield, 3-1, Friday afternoon at day one of the UConn Autumn Classic in Harry A. Gampel Pavilion. The win moves UConn to 8-11 overall, while Fairfield falls to 10-11.
Game one saw UConn jump out to an early 7-2, lead but Fairfield fought back to tie it at 14. The game then went back and forth with the Huskies scoring the final two points for the 30-28 win.
In game two the match was even as the two teams traded points. Connecticut then got a six point push on freshman Jenny Neeland’s (Gainesville, FL) serve, which included two aces. The Huskies held on from there for a 30-26 victory.
Fairfield came out on fire after the break and took control of game three. The Stags hit .372 in the 30-17 win in game three.
The Huskies closed out the match in game four as they kept it tight early, but with a good push on senior Christine Lambert’s (Lancaster, CA) serves UConn won 30-26.
UConn was led by sophomore Jamie Hadenfeldt (Benicia, CA) with a kill-dig double-double of 17 kills and 16 digs. Seniors Lambert, Melissa Wooley (Ridgecrest, CA) and Stephanie Ziemann (Linden, CA) also had strong outings. Lambert recorded 13 kills and five blocks, while Wooley had 17 kills and eight digs. Defensively Ziemann registered a team high 23 digs and junior Julie Erbez (Stockton, CA) set the game with 54 assists and 11 digs.
Fairfield was led by Casey Machon with 15 kills and Kelly Sorensen with 48 assists.
In the first match of the day No. 7 Long Beach State defeated Rhode Island, 3-1.
Connecticut returns to action on Sat., Oct. 19, at 2:30 pm, when they host No.7 Long Beach State in the UConn Autumn Classic at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion.
