Huskies Remain Undefeated With Win at Northeastern Husky Invitational

BOSTON, MA (Jan. 25, 2002) -- Behind 11 top-three performances, the University of Connecticut women’s track and field team finished first with 140.5 points among the 14-team field at the Northeastern Husky Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center in Boston, MA, Friday evening. The victory comes on the heels of a win at the New England Challenge Cup last weekend, helping the Huskies remain undefeated in the indoor season.
UConn posted four first-place finishes on the night, paced by senior Wadudah Nurul-Islam (Providence, RI), who posted her fourth victory in as many meets this season in the weight throw with a heave of 59’101/2”. Nurul-Islam was joined in the victory column by classmate Nichole Tremblay (Warwick, RI), who ran to her second first-place finish in the 1,000-meters this season with 2:57.58.
Other first-place finishers for the Huskies included sophomore Nicola Hines (Bridgeport, CT), with a personal best 58.29 in the 400-meters, and the 4x400 relay team with a time of 3:52.7.
Senior Sharmaine Abrams (Manchester, CT) scored points in two events for the Huskies, placing second in the 200-meters with a time of 25.44 and fourth in the 55-meters at 7.28. Sophomore Deirdre Mullen (Princeton, NJ) recorded a personal best of 5’83/4” for second-place in the high jump while freshman April Garner (Temple Hills, MD) and junior Gillian Flemmings (Bridgeport, CT) comprised a 2-3 Husky finish in the 55-meter hurdles with 8.11 and 8.18, respectively.
UConn returns to action on Feb. 8-9 in the Armory Invitational in New York City.
