STORRS, CT (Thursday, Sept. 6)—A goal late in the first half from junior midfielder Anthony Curtis (Kingston, Jamaica) was all the Connecticut men’s soccer team would need, as the Huskies defeated Boston University 1-0 at Morrone Stadium on Thursday night.
BU’s Erik Evjen received a yellow card after fouling UConn’s Cesar Cuellar (New York, NY) outside the Connecticut offensive box. Curtis shot the free kick to the top left of the goal out of the reach of Terrier goalie Matthew Smith. The goal propelled the Huskies to 2-1-1 on the season while Boston University suffered its first loss falling to 2-1-0.
Senior goalkeeper Bryheem Hancock (Middletown, DE) and the UConn defense made the lone tally stand. The Terriers had their best chance to tie the game with 12 minutes to play on a breakaway, but Hancock, who made four saves on the night, came out of goal to make a sliding stop and preserve his first shutout of the season.
Smith made five saves in the game, several of which were acrobatic. With under nine minutes to play he jumped and made a save off his fingertips, and thirty seconds later made a diving stop on a blast from Cuellar.
UConn will travel to Villanova University on Sunday, September 9 to take on the Wildcats at 1:00 p.m. in Villanova, PA.
