Huskies Sweep In-State Foe Fairfield, 3-0

STORRS, CT (Sept. 30, 2001) - Behind a 13-kill effort by junior (Ridgecrest, CA), the University of Connecticut volleyball team defeated Fairfield, 3-0, Sunday afternoon. UConn improves to 10-3 this season while Fairfield is 6-6.
The Huskies dominated from the beginning of the match as Fairfield struggled with hitting percentages of .111, .044 and -.054 in games one through three, respectively. UConn claimed the first two games by the score of 30-24 and notched a 30-18 victory in game three.
Husky setter senior (Fairview Park, OH) added a double-double with 36 assists and 12 digs. Shaker also had four service aces. Junior (Lancaster, CA) just missed double-digit kills, recording nine kills and a hitting percentage of .412.
"This was a huge win for us today, not just because we beat Fairfield, 3-0, but because we played as well as we did," UConn coach said. "We had balanced offense, outstanding blocking and great defense."
Fairfield was paced by Joanne Saunders with seven kills. Stag setter Kelly Sorensen posted a double-double with 16 assists and 12 digs.
The Huskies return to action on Friday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. when BIG EAST play resumes against Syracuse at Gampel Pavilion.
