PISCATAWAY, NJ (September 29, 2001)- A career-long 47-yard field goal by Marc Hickok (Gloversville, NY) with 3:04 remaining in the game lifted the University of Connecticut over Rutgers 20-19 Saturday night in Piscataway, NJ.
In a game that served as a preview of BIG EAST contests down the road with the Huskies making the move into the league in 2005, Connecticut came up with its first win of the season as its record stands at 1-3, while Rutgers slipped to 1-3. The victory ended a seven game losing skid for the Huskies and marked the teams third-ever division I road win.
The Huskies jumped on the board first when Keron Henry (Fr., Brooklyn, NY) took one in from 24 yards out with 12:46 left in the first quarter, marking both his second rushing touchdown of the season and the longest run of his career.
Minutes later, Hickok (Gloversville, NY) stretched the lead to 10-0 as he connected on a 46-yard field goal. On the season, Hickok is 6-of-7 overall, and 4-of-5 from 40 yards or more, with the lone miss coming on a 52-yard attempt against Eastern Washington.
From there, Rutgers rattled off 16 unanswered points starting when Ryan Cubit hooked up with Delrico Fletcher on a 19-yard touchdown strike three seconds before the end of the first quarter. With 7:53 on the clock in the second quarter, Ryan Sands tied it up at 10 with a 38-yard field goal.
With 2:13 remaining before the half, Cubit had his second passing touchdown to put Rutgers on top with a 10-yard completion to Tres Moses, but Sands missed the extra point as it sailed to the left of the upright. The Rutgers defense provided a lift going into intermission as UConn had worked its way to the four-yard line. On the eighth play of the drive, cornerback Tony Berry stepped in front of a Dan Orlovsky (Fr., Shelton, CT) pass and came up with his first interception of the season.
In the third quarter, Rutgers gambled on a fake punt, but was unable to come away with a first down. After the Huskies took control, Orlovsky threw the first touchdown pass of his career to Tommy Collins (Jr., Jacksonville, FL), who shook off Shawn Seabrooks and went 30 yards into the end zone. Hickok hit the extra point to give UConn the one point lead. However, with 9:05 left in the fourth Sands hit his second field goal of the night, this time from 22 yards away, to make it 19-17.
After Hickok made it 20-19, Rutgers was unable to score on its next possession, and a roughing the punter penalty gave UConn a first down that allowed the offense to run out the clock.
For Connecticut, Keron Henry suffered a hip pointer early in the game and was sidelined. He finished the night with four completions on five attempts for 37 yards. Orlovsky took over and went 12 for 25 with one interception for 103 yards and one touchdown pass.
Connecticut will return home for its next contest as it is set to take on Eastern Michigan on Saturday, October 6 at 1 p.m. UConn and Eastern Michigan met for the first time in 2000 and the Eagles took a 32-25 decision on a last minute touchdown pass from Walter Church to Kevin Walter.
