LAS VEGAS — The No. 5 Connecticut men’s soccer team couldn’t contain a crafty UNLV offense Sunday as the Huskies fell to the Rebels, 6-1, in their second game of the UNLV Tournament, held at the Peter Johann Memorial Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev.
UNLV struck first off a goal by Alex Hernandez, assisted by Reggie Bolden, with 31:37 gone in the game.
Trailing 1-0 going into the second half, the Huskies quickly tied the game up when sophomore Lindon Pecorelli (LaCrescenta, CA) crossed the ball to junior Michael Mordocco (Dix Hills, NY), who sent it up to junior Damani Ralph (Meridian, MS), running in from the right wing. Ralph shot the ball into the lower right-hand corner of the net 2:20 into the second half for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
The Rebels then went on a scoring barrage, netting their next four goals in a time-span of 10:48, including two from Kelly Frederick and Hernandez’s second of the game.
Hernandez further sealed the win with a final goal, his third to complete a hat trick, off a penalty kick with 76:17 gone in the game.
Last season, the Huskies gave up only 13 goals in 25 games. So far this season, they have given up 14 in only seven, and the last time UConn gave up six goals was in a loss to North Carolina on Sept. 2, 1995, in a 6-0 shutout.
In the first game of the tournament, UConn tied Fresno State, 2-2. The Huskies record now stands at 3-2-2.
UConn is in action again at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at home as it takes on Pittsburgh in the Huskies second BIG EAST match-up of the season.
