LAS VEGAS (September 21)—The No. 5 Connecticut men’s soccer team battled Fresno State to a 2-2, double-overtime tie tonight at the UNLV/Fila Rebel Classic at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
UConn, which had a 12-day layoff since defeating Villanova in double overtime on Sept. 9, moved to 3-1-2 overall on the season. The Bulldogs are now 2-1-2.
Junior forward Damani Ralph (Meridian, MS) got the Huskies on the board 39 seconds into the second half with his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Junior midfielder Anthony Curtis (Kingston, Jamaica) sent the ball from the midfield stripe up the left side to freshman Jose Sura (Brentwood, NY), who pushed a pass forward to Ralph who beat the diving Fresno State goalkeeper to the far post.
The Bulldogs tied things up at the 74:40 mark on a penalty kick from Noah Delgado, who was fouled in the box by senior defender Sam Forko (Houston, TX). Delgado beat UConn keeper Bryheem Hancock (Middletown, DE) with a shot to the lower-left side of the goal.
Five minutes later, Fresno State took the lead when Joshua LeRoy took a pass from Kupona Low and beat a diving Hancock to the far post from 15 yards. The Bulldogs couldn’t hold the lead, though, as senior midfielder Mansour Ndiaye (New York, NY) tied things up with his first goal of the season. Sophomore Lindon Pecorelli (LaCrescenta, CA) sent a ball into the center of the box and Ndiaye deposited the ball into the middle of the net.
Both teams recorded 16 shots on the night. Hancock made seven saves in goal while Fresno State’s Jeremey Proud made three.
Connecticut will wrap up its weekend at the UNLV Classic against host UNLV on Sunday, Sept. 23. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. Eastern time.
