STORRS, CT (September 1, 2001) – A Brett Wiesner goal 6:34 into the first period would hold up to give the University of Washington a 1-0 victory over the University of Connecticut in men’s soccer action at the Bob’s Stores UConn Soccer Classic in Storrs Saturday night. The goal would send Washington to a 2-0 record and sent Connecticut in search of itself after debuting with a 3-3 tie against Akron last night as the Huskies’ record now stands at 0-1-1.
The early tally came when UConn junior Andrew McLeod (Meridian, MS) attempted to clear the ball with a header that went in the direction of Wiesner who nailed it over the outstretched hands of Bryheem Hancock (Sr., Middletown, DE). UConn did have its chances though after much of the first half was played on its end of the field, the momentum switched for the final 10 minutes of the half. In all, both UConn and Washington came up with 11 shots each.
Hancock went the distance in the goal as he had four saves on the night, while Washington’s Chad Olsen stopped five.
Washington entered the game ranked 14th nationally in the coaches poll and are led by a seven-player senior class that was a part of the UW’s second round exit from the NCAA tournament a season ago that came by virtue of a 2-1 loss against Indiana.
After the game, the following players were named to the all-tournament team:Chad Olsen (GK, Washington), Bryn Ritchie (D, Washington), CJ Klaas (MF, Washington), Bret Wiesner (F, Washington), Cesar Cuellar (F, UConn), Lindon Pecorelli (F, UConn), Anthony Curtis (MF, UConn), Aaron Paye (F, Fairleigh Dickinson), Danny Lozano (MF, Fairleigh Dickinson), Torbjorn Birkelan (MF, Akron) and Orjan Bjaneso (F, Akron).
UConn will try to bounce back Tuesday, September 4, as it hosts St. Peter’s at Morrone Stadium in Storrs with the game time at 7 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday, October 17.
