Tamika Toppin Sets Big East Meet Record

PISCATAWAY, NEW JERSEY - University of Connecticut senior All-American Tamika Toppin (South Plainfield, NJ) established a conference record Sunday with a winning leap of 5'11.5" in the high jump in final day competition at the BIG EAST Conference Women's Track and Field Outdoor Championship.
Connecticut placed ninth in the 14-school Big East field with 50 points. Miami won the team title with 104 points and Seton Hall was second with 95 points.
UConn collected 18 of its points in the high jump as Toppin led the Huskies to a one-two finish in the event. Connecticut freshman Deirdre Mullen (Princeton, NJ) was second with a jump of 5?8.5?.
Junior Wadudah Nurul-Islam (Providence, RI) recorded 11 points for UConn by placing third in the hammer throw (179'5") and adding a fourth in the discus (148'9").
Freshman Nicole Toney (Hartford, CT) chalked up nine points for Connecticut with a third place effort in the triple jump (42'2.25") and a sixth place showing in the long jump (19').
Other point scorers for the Huskies included: sophomore Tali Griner (Kirait Mzkin, Israel) was fifth in the pole vault, sophomore Lisa Deskis (Broad Brook, CT) was sixth in the javelin, senior Lissa Bloom (Peabody, MA) was eighth in the shot put, sophomore Kelly Joy (N. Montpelier, VT) was eighth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, junior Sharmaine Abrams (Manchester, CT) was eighth in the 100 meter dash, and the 4x100 meter relay team of Abrams, Toney, Michelle Carter (Danbury, CT), and Kafi Davis (Norwich, CT) was seventh.
