UConn Women's Track Places 11th At ECAC Championship

PRINCETON, NJ- With a score of 29.5 points, the University of Connecticut women's outdoor track and field team came away with an 11th place showing at the 18th ECAC Championship on Sunday at William Weaver Stadium in Princeton, NJ. The finish marked the second straight season that UConn ended the competition in the position as this year's meet also gave Georgetown back-to- back team titles with the Hoyas scoring 87 points.
On Sunday, the Huskies had four athletes in action with Lisa Deskis (So., Broad Brook, CT), Deirdre Mullin (Fr., Princeton, NJ), Nicole Toney (Fr., West Hartford, CT) and Tamika Toppin (Sr., South Plainfield, NJ) competing. Toney had a runner up effort in the triple jump where she turned in a 42' 5 1/2?. Mullin and Toppin had identical heights of 5' 8? in the high jump to finish second and third, respectively. Deskis rounded out the list of UConn's student-athletes as she took 12th in the javelin with a 130' 4?.
Over the past three days, Wadudah Nurul-Islam (Jr., Providence, RI) had turned in a pair of top ten finishes to lead the Huskies. She had a runner-up performance in the hammer throw with a 180' 10 and also used a 144' 4? in the discus for ninth. The finish in the hammer fell into line with her first place showing at the New England Championship a week ago (181' 10?) and her third place finish at the BIG EAST Championship to start off the month of May (179' 5?).
Also cracking into the top ten in events with finals prior to Sunday was Kelly Joy (So., N. Montpelier, VT) who clocked an 11:08.49 in the 3000m steeplechase for 10th. Joy's time bettered that of 11:21.81 at the BIG EAST Championship, which had stood as her previous best, it was there that she finished eighth.
