HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -
Senior shortstop Jessica Yanosy (Milford, Conn.) scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh as the University of Connecticut softball team escaped Hofstra University with a 2-1 decision in a non- league single game Tuesday afternoon in Hempstead, N.Y.
The victory marked UConn's 21st consecutive win, which currently ranks second best among NCAA Division I leaders. Hofstra would threaten to end that remarkable streak in the bottom of the first inning, when the Pride's Amanda Hallaway sent an RBI single to right field to score teammate Heather Brousseau for the 1-0 lead.
The Huskies found its way back in the third frame, when Hofstra gave up three errors, which sent junior Lisa Girolamo (Ashby, Mass.) home for the tie. Both teams would go scoreless in the following three full innings.
With back-to-back singles turned in by senior co- captain Sarah Sandford (Carlsbad, N.M.) and Yanosy in the start of the UConn 7th, the Huskies were able to set up the go-ahead run. Sophomore Nicole Dubovik (Coral Springs, Fla.) hit a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third. Senior co-captain Mandy Simjian (Wallingford, Conn.) next reached on a fielder's choice, but Hofstra shortstop Heather Brousseau and catcher Meaghan Almon would throw Sandford out at the plate. This led to Yanosy's game-winning run on the wild pitch by Hofstra pitcher Kelly Blois.
Sophomore righthander Barb Cook (Conklin, N.Y.) held off the Pride in the bottom of the seventh, quickly retiring the side 1-2-3. She went the distance pitching a two-hitter and tossing seven strikeouts to improve her win-loss record to 13- 9. UConn lifts its overall record to 30-18, while Hofstra falls to 28-21 overall.
Connecticut returns to BIG EAST Conference action this weekend, with key doubleheaders versus St. John's on Saturday, May 5 at noon and Seton Hall on Sunday, May 6 at noon. Results from this weekend will determine which teams will qualify for the BIG EAST Championship Tournament on May 10-12 in Villanova, Pa. Ninth- ranked Notre Dame and Villanova have already clinched two-of-four spots in postseason league play.
