Huskies Sitting Pretty After First Day of Competition

SOUTH BEND, IN (December 7, 2001) – After the first day of competition at the Notre Dame Invitational, the University of Connecticut men’s and women’s swimming and diving team is looking strong to finish high in the meet. The women are currently sitting in second place with 477 points, behind only Notre Dame, which has 794 points. The men are trailing Notre Dame with 729 points, and Oakland with 597.50 points, for third place with 521.50 points.
Teams participating in the meet on the women’s side also include Oakland, Northern Michigan, Bowling Green State, St. Louis, Hillsdale College, and Wisconsn. On the men’s side, the competition is between Notre Dame, Oakland, UConn, Bowling Green State, St. Louis, and Wisconsin.
Leading the women’s team for the day were freshman Cassie Novak (Cheshire, CT), who placed first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:56.70 and sophomore Lindsay Hansen (Clearwater, FL), who took second in the event with a time of 4:57.13. Junior diver Melissa Kull (Poughkeepsie, NY) also helped the Husky cause by placing third in the one-meter dive with a point total of 246.95.
On the men’s side, sophomore Dustin Rogers (West Allis, WI) and freshman Bobby Folan (Canberra, Australia) finished fourth and eighth, respectively, in the 200-yard individual medley with times of 1:56.02 and 1:57.79. The men’s divers also came up big for them as junior Kevin McKinney (Mt. Laurel, NJ) took fourth in the three-meter dive with a total of 396.15, and sophomore Chase Dunlap (Canandaigua, NY) took fifth with a total of 393.95.
The Huskies will continue competition Friday and Saturday in the invitational.
