STORRS, CT (December 10, 2001) – Two swimmers for the University of Connecticut women’s swimming and diving team led the team to a second-place finish at the Notre Dame Invitational this past weekend. The only team to triumph over the Huskies was No. 13 Notre Dame.
Freshman Cassie Novak (Cheshire, CT) took first place in the 500 yard freestyle, 200 yard freestyle and 200 yard back. She was in the 800 freestyle relay, as well, which took first place. Her time in the back, 2:00.58, was an NCAA "B" qualifying mark, as well as a Senior National cut. She also broke the UConn school record in the 200 back, previously set in 1994 by Hilliary Krug.
Novak’s four first-place finishes added to her already escalating total of first-place finishes for the season. Through seven meets, she has tallied 12 first-place individual finishes and five first-place relay finishes.
Sophomore Lindsay Hansen (Clearwater, FL) was on the same 800 freestyle relay as Novak, and also took first place in the 1650 yard freestyle with a time of 16:54.28. Like Novak, Hansen’s time was an NCAA "B" qualifying mark and a Senior National cut. She also broke her current school record in the 1650 free, which she set last season at 17:02.27 as a freshman.
"Cassie was absolutely unbelievable," Goldberg said. "Lindsay Hansen was absolutely unbelievable, also. Cassie and Lindsay were one and two in the 500 free and the 200 free, then they won the 800 freestyle relay, which was great."
