UConn Outlasts Fairfield in Five-Setter, 3-2

FAIRFIELD, CT (Nov. 8, 2001) -- Behind a balanced offense with five players in double-digit kills, the University of Connecticut volleyball team outlasted Fairfield, 3-2, Thursday night in only its third five-set match of the season. Heading into the final weekend of the regular season, UConn’s record stands at 19-6. Fairfield falls to 16-10.
The Huskies opened the match by taking a close first set, 32-30, but dropped the next two games by scores of 19-30 and 27-30, respectively. UConn rallied with a .471 hitting percentage to take the fourth game, 30-22, before putting away the decisive fifth game, 15-9.
Three Huskies registered double-doubles in the match. Senior setter (Fairview Park, OH) had an impressive all-round performance, posting 55 assists, 12 digs, five kills, five blocks and a .556 attack percentage. Sophomore (Ridgecrest, CA) also tallied a team-high 17 kills with 10 digs while freshman (Benicia, CA) recorded 12 kills and a career-high 17 digs.
Junior (Lancaster, CA) just missed her second double-double of the season with 11 kills and nine blocks. Sophomore (Marshall, MN) added 13 kills and a .435 hitting percentage while sophomore (Stockton, CA) rounded out the Huskies in double-digit kills with 12 kills and a .320 attack percentage.
Conny Paul led Fairfield with a match-high 25 kills. Carola Stowe added 17 kills while setter Meghan Mahaffy registered 57 assists and 16 digs for the Stags.
UConn returns to action Saturday against Providence. Match time is 2 p.m. at the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, CT. The match will be the Huskies’ last home contest of the 2001 season. UConn closes out the regular season at Boston College Sunday.
The Huskies have already clinched a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament, to be held Nov. 17-18 in Pittsburgh, PA.
