Volleyball Rebounds with 3-1 Victory Over Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, VA (Nov. 4, 2001) -- After losing the first game by the score of 22-30, the University of Connecticut volleyball team won the next three games to defeat Virginia Tech, 3-1, at Cassell Coliseum Sunday afternoon. With the win, UConn improves to 18-6 overall, 7-3 in the BIG EAST, while Virginia Tech, in its first season in the BIG EAST, falls to 9-15 overall, 5-6 in the conference.
The Hokies came out strong, posting a .355 hitting percentage in game one. UConn responded with a hitting percentage of .310 of its own in the second game, while the Virginia Tech offense cooled down with a .080 percentage. Connecticut took the second game, 30-21, and went on to claim the third and fourth games by scores of 30-16 and 30-22, respectively. After posting just a .114 hitting percentage in game one, the Huskies finished with a percentage of .301 for the match.
Junior (Ridgecrest, CA) posted her 11th double-double of the season with a match-high 19 kills, 12 digs and a .302 hitting percentage. Sophomore (Marshall, MN) added 12 kills and six blocks for the Huskies while junior (North Fork, CA) had a season-high 11 kills with eight digs. Freshman (Benicia, CA) tied a career-high with 15 digs to go along with eight kills.
Senior setter (Fairview Park, OH) just missed a double-double with 47 assists and nine digs.
Virginia Tech was led by Holly Disser with 15 kills and 13 digs. Christine Shubat and Jenny Hill also contributed double-digit kills for the Hokies.
UConn returns to action Thursday, Nov. 8, when it faces in-state foe Fairfield for the second time this season. Match time is 7 p.m. at Fairfield. The Huskies close out the regular season next weekend with contests against BIG EAST rivals Providence and Boston College.
