STORRS, CT (November 3) — An overtime score from junior Anthony Curtis (Kingston, Jamaica) gave the No. 9 Connecticut men’s soccer team at 1-0 win over No. 10 Rutgers Saturday night at Morrone Stadium.
UConn improved to 12-3-2 overall and 8-1-0 in the BIG EAST. The victory also clinched at least a share of the BIG EAST regular season title for the Huskies, who could claim the conference title outright with a win against St. John’s on Tuesday. The loss dropped the Scarlet Knights to 12-4-3 overall and 6-2-1 in the conference.
Both teams had their chances to score in regulation but neither could take advantage. The Huskies finally broke through in the 101st minute when, after a throw in from the right sideline, junior Damani Ralph (Meridian, MS) controlled a ball just inside the penalty area and dropped a pass back for Curtis at the top of the box. Curtis blasted the game winner from 18-yards out into the top of the net. The goal was his second of the season.
UConn senior Bryheem Hancock (Middletown, DE) earned his eighth shutout of the season and fourth in as many games while making two saves in net. Rutgers goalkeeper JD Martin recorded four saves on the night. The Huskies outshot the Scarlet Knights 13-8 and had a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The overtime win was UConn’s second over Rutgers in as many games. Last season the Huskies downed the Scarlet Knights in extra time, 2-1, in Piscataway, NJ to clinch the conference crown. Connecticut improved its all-time record against Rutgers to 6-7-1.
Connecticut will close out the regular season on Tuesday, November 6 against St. John’s at Morrone Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Sept. 15 but was postponed.
