UConn Places 12th at NCAA District 1 Qualifier

BOSTON, MA (Nov. 10, 2001)-- With the top two teams receiving automatic bids to the NCAA Championship, the University of Connecticut women’s cross country team ran to a 12th-place finish at the NCAA District 1 Qualifier Saturday afternoon. Sophomore (Jamaica Plain, MA) garnered All-District honors for the Huskies, who improved from a 14th-place finish in 2000.
Casilli paced the Huskies once again, placing 16th with a time of 21:25 to receive All-District honors with the top-25 finish. Junior (Montpelier, VT) finished second for UConn, running 22:48.3 for 83rd place. She was followed by senior (Warwick, RI), who finished 88th with a time of 22:54.7. Rounding out the Husky finishers, freshmen (Hillsborough, NJ) and (Loudonville, NY) placed 104th and 112th, respectively, while senior (Toms River, NJ) ran to a 125th finish.
As a team, UConn had 400 points for the 12th-place finish. Boston College won the meet with 53 points. The Eagles also took home top individual honors as Megan Guiney finished first for Boston College. Providence took second with 95 points, followed by Brown with 118 points, Cornell with 120 points and Yale with 128 points. By virtue of their top-two team finishes, Boston College and Providence garnered automatic berths in the NCAA Championship, to be held Nov. 19 at Furman University in South Carolina.
UConn will find out Monday, Nov. 12, if Casilli earned an at-large individual berth to the NCAA Championship. A total of 255 individuals will compete at the Championship.
For the team, the meet marked the end of the 2001 cross country season. The indoor portion of the women’s track and field season will begin Dec. 1 at the Brown Invitational.
