Huskies Lose Tough Match to No. 22 Notre Dame

STORRS, CT (Oct. 7, 2001)-- Behind 20 kills by BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year Kristy Kreher, No. 22 Notre Dame defeated the University of Connecticut volleyball team by the score of 3-1 in BIG EAST action Sunday afternoon at Gampel Pavilion. UConn falls to 11-4 overall, 2-2 in the BIG EAST, while the Fighting Irish improve to 10-3 overall, 5-0 in the BIG EAST.
Kreher was matched in the kills department by her UConn counterpart junior (Ridgecrest, CA). After losing a tight first set, 30-27, Wooley led the Husky charge in game two, as Connecticut stormed from as many as five points down to claim the set, 30-25. The Huskies hit .302 in game two.
The Fighting Irish showed why they are nationally ranked in the final two sets, out-hitting UConn .324 to .135 and .237 and .000 en route to 30-21 and 30-20 victories, respectively. Four Irish players notched double-digit kills: Kreher, Kim Fletcher (14), Emily Loomis (12) and Malinda Goralski (12). Setter Kristen Kinder had 56 assists while Janie Alderere had 18 digs.
For Connecticut, Wooley registered 12 digs to go along with her 20 kills for the double-double. Wooley hit an impressive .326 for the match and was joined in the double-digit kills category by sophomore (Marshall, MN), who had 12 kills, and sophomore (Ridgecrest, CA), who notched 10 kills. Senior setter (Fairview Park, OH) also contributed a double-double, her fifth consecutive one, with 45 assists and 12 digs.
The Huskies begin a three-game road trip this Friday, Oct. 12, when they travel to Pittsburgh to face the Panthers in a 7 p.m. BIG EAST match.
