PROVIDENCE, RI (Oct. 29, 2001) -- Junior (Ridgecrest, CA) was named BIG EAST Player of the Week and freshman (Benicia, CA) was tabbed BIG EAST Rookie of the Week after the University of Connecticut volleyball team went 3-0 last week. The Huskies are now 17-5 overall and boast a 6-2 record in the BIG EAST after sweeping conference foes Seton Hall and St. John’s this past weekend.
The Player of the Week honor is the second of the season for Wooley, who shared the Oct. 15 award with Kristy Kreher of Notre Dame. Wooley led UConn in kills and digs last week, posting 57 kills (5.7 per game) and 32 digs (3.2 per game) in three matches. In a 3-1 win over Fordham, Wooley posted 27 kills, one short of tying a career high, 10 digs and .327 hitting percentage. In UConn’s two conference victories, Wooley had 16 kills and 12 digs against Seton Hall and 14 kills and 10 digs against St. John’s. She also hit .333 against the Red Storm.
Wooley’s “double-doubles” in each match increased her team-leading tally to 10 this season. Wooley also leads Connecticut in kills per game (4.55) and service aces per game (0.44) this season. Her Player of the Week honor is the third for a UConn player in 2001; junior Christine Lambert (Lancaster, CA) also earned BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week honors for Sept. 3.
Hadenfeldt earned her first BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honor after averaging 2.5 kills per game and 2.3 digs per game last week. Against Fordham, Hadenfeldt registered her third double-double of the season with 14 kills, a new career high, and 12 digs. Hadenfeldt also contributed three blocks and three service aces in last week’s matches.
The Huskies face BIG EAST foe Georgetown Friday night in a battle for third place in the conference. Match time is 8 p.m. in Washington, DC.
