UConn Blanks BIG EAST Foe Seton Hall, 3-0

STORRS, CT (October 26, 2001) -- Behind double-doubles by senior (Fairview Park, OH) and junior (Ridgecrest, CA), the University of Connecticut volleyball team blitzed BIG EAST rival Seton Hall, 3-0, Friday night at Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies improve to 16-5 overall, 5-2 in the BIG EAST, while Seton Hall falls to 10-10 overall, 3-4 in the BIG EAST.
Although UConn only hit .129 in the match, the Pirates could muster only a .028 hitting percentage of their own. The Huskies took game one easily with a 30-22 score as Seton Hall struggled with a -.097 attack percentage. Although the Pirates would rebound and keep the remainder of the match close behind Kari Belin’s 11 kills and 11 digs, Connecticut took games two and three by the scores of 30-25 and 30-28, respectively.
Wooley tallied a match-high 16 kills and 12 digs in the contest while Shaker had 39 assists, 14 digs and four blocks. Junior (Lancaster, CA) added nine kills and six blocks with a .350 hitting percentage and junior (North Fork, CA) contributed 10 digs.
Seton Hall entered the match ranked No. 6 nationally in service aces per game with 2.68, but UConn gave the Hall a dose of its own medicine, notching eight aces to the Pirates’ one. Sophomore (Stockton, CA) had three service aces for Connecticut.
UConn returns to action in a 1 p.m. home match Sunday, October 28, against St. John’s. Entering weekend competition, the Red Storm and the Huskies were tied for fourth in the BIG EAST Conference with the top four teams being invited to the BIG EAST Tournament, which will be held in Pittsburgh, PA, November 16-18.
