UConn Falls to Rhode Island, 3-1

KINGSTON, RI (October 17, 2001) -- After winning two matches in a row this past weekend, the University of Connecticut volleyball team fell to Rhode Island by the score of 3-1 Wednesday night at Keaney Gymnasium. With the loss, UConn is now 13-5 overall this season. Rhode Island is 11-7.
Paced by Brooke Ecklund’s 19 kills and a double-double performance by Amy Kauppila with 15 kills and a match-high 23 digs, the Rams attacked the Huskies from the beginning of the match, claiming the first two games. UConn rebounded in the third set, hitting .422 en route to a 30-24 victory, but Rhode Island responded by hitting .326 to win the final game, 30-24, and record its eighth consecutive victory.
Junior (Ridgecrest, CA) led the Huskies on offense and defense, recording 19 kills and 17 digs. Sophomore (Stockton, CA) narrowly missed a trible-double with nine kills, 21 assists and nine digs. Erbez also hit .412 in the match. Sophomore (Marshall, MN) also turned in a notable performance for the Huskies with 16 kills and a .519 hitting percentage.
UConn next faces Manhattan in a 2 p.m. match Saturday, October 20, at Gampel Pavilion. The match will be the Huskies’ first home match since a 3-1 loss to BIG EAST rival Notre Dame on October 7.
