VILLANOVA, PA - Needing to go two-for-two on the weekend in order to keep BIG EAST Conference Tournament hopes alive, the women's volleyball team did just that as it defeated Villanova on Nov. 5 in three games (15-5, 15-10, 15-3). The victory was the Huskies third straight sweep of an opponent and the 12th this year. Connecticut's record improved to 17-11, 6-4 BIG EAST, while Villanova's fell to 9-19, 2- 8. The win also gave UConn head coach Kelli Myers her third straight win over the Wildcats, as the Huskies have never been defeated by Villanova under Myers.
The first game of the match served as an indicator of things to come, as UConn combined for a .304 attack percentage average, while holding Villanova to -.045. On the night, Connecticut finished at .347 to Villanova's .134. Four UConn players reached double figures in kills with Melissa Wooley (So., OH, Ridgecrest, CA) leading the group with 12. Janice Dykema (So., MH, Kalamazoo, MI) and Stephanie Schindel (Sr., OH, Diamond Bar, CA) both had 11, while Christine Lambert (So., MH, Lancaster, CA) finished with 10. Schindel's 11 digs led the defense and gave her an 11th consecutive double-double (18 on the season). Maria Shaker (Jr., S, Fairview Park, OH) had 36 of UConn's 43 assists.
UConn ends the BIG EAST Conference regular season slate on Nov. 10, as the Huskies travel to Jamaica, NY, to play St. John's. The matchup will have BIG EAST Conference Tournament title implications, as the Red Storm is currently one game ahead of UConn. However, history favors Connecticut as St. John's has never defeated the Huskies with UConn leading the series, 6-0. The Huskies would need a win, and for Notre Dame to defeat Syracuse, in order to earn a trip to South Bend, IN, for the conference tournament.
