WASHINGTON D.C. (Nov. 4, 2000) -- For the second time in as many contests and the 11th time this year, the University of Connecticut womens volleyball team swept its opponent as it wasted no time in defeating Georgetown Saturday night (15-6, 17-15, 15-12). The win moves the Huskies to 16-11 on the year, but more importantly gives them the first step needed in climbing back into the race for a BIG EAST Conference Tournament position with a 5-4 league mark. Georgetowns record stands at 15-11 and 5-4 in the BIG EAST.
As has been the story for the majority of the year, Stephanie Schindel (Sr., OH, Diamond Bar, CA) took control of the Connecticut offense and defense with 15 kills and 11 digs, both led the squad in the respective categories. Her performance was also her 10th straight double-double and 17th this season. As a team, UConn had 11 service aces, the majority of which came from Schindel who had six to tie her career high. UConns combined effort tied its season high of 11, which was set at Maryland (10/14/00). Maria Shaker (Jr., S, Fairview Park, Ohio) continued her steady play as the primary setter with 24 assists.
On Sunday, Nov. 5, UConn will wrap up the weekend at Villanova. The Wildcats are 15-9 lifetime against the Huskies. However, under UConn head coach Kelli Myers, the Huskies have never lost to Villanova, winning the first meeting in 1998, 3-2, followed by a score of 3-1, a season ago.
