CLEMSON, S.C. - A Cesar Cuellar (New York, NY) bicycle kick at the 101:18 mark in overtime proved to be the winning goal for the University of Connecticut men's soccer team as the Huskies defeated Clemson Sunday afternoon, 2-1, in the second round of the 2000 NCAA Men's College Cup at Riggs Field in Clemson, SC. Although the meeting was the first time the two schools have squared off in postseason play, the two have faced one another on five other occasions. However, today's win marked the first for UConn.
Clemson attacked first as Mark Lisi tallied the only goal of either team in the opening half off an assist from Pablo Webster at 8:59. The momentum switched at 65:14 as Clemson's Oskar Bringsved was assessed his second yellow card of the contest, meaning the Tigers would play one man down from that point on. The 1-0 Tiger lead held until 86:26 when UConn's Donny Mark (Shorewood, MN) converted on a feed at the top of the box from Chris Gbandi (Houston, TX).
Junior UConn goalkeeper, Bryheem Hancock (Middletown, DE), made one stop, while Clemson's Doug Warren cleared away 11.
In earlier action today Brown defeated Duke, 1-0, the Bears victory sets up a showdown between Brown and UConn. The day, site and time of that contest are yet to be determined and will be announced at a later date. UConn is 4-0-1 against common opponents, Brown in 3-2.
