Eleventh Ranked UCLA Tops UConn In Volleyball

Waco, TX - For the second time in as many matches, the University of Connecticut womens volleyball was swept by an opponent ranked inside the AVCA/USA Today Top 25 as No. 11 UCLA defeated the Huskies Friday evening in the opening match of the 2000 Baylor Thanksgiving Classic (1-15, 9-15, 13-15). With the loss, UConn now stands at 19- 13 and 7-4 in the BIG EAST, while the Bruins are 21-7 and 14-4 in the Pac-10.
UCLA tabulated the second best hitting average of any Husky opponent this season, .352, while UConn was held to .171.
Stephanie Schindel (Sr., OH, Diamond Bar, CA) controlled the offense and the defense with 13 kills and 12 digs, both of which led the team. The double-double is her 21st this season and 14th in her last 15 matches. Melissa Wooley (So., OH, Ridgecrest, CA) picked up where she left off during UConns last match as she reached double figures in kills with 12. Wooley also tied her career high in service aces with four (9/25/99, vs. Southern Methodist). Julie Erbez (Fr., S, Stockton, CA), who as of lately had been splitting time with Maria Shaker (Jr., S, Fairview Park, OH) at the setter position, had the majority of the assists with 43.
UConn now awaits the outcome of tonights Baylor- UNLV match. The loser will meet UConn in the consolation match at 6 p.m. Saturday, with the championship match beginning thirty minutes after the conclusion of that contest. With tomorrows contest being UConns final match of the season, the Huskies need a win in order to secure their fourth straight season (13th in school history) in which Connecticut has won 20 or more matches.
