PISCATAWAY, NJ (Nov. 10)- For the first time on the 2000 season, the University of Connecticut mens soccer team gave up a third goal, which proved to be all the difference Seton Hall would need as the Pirates shocked UConn, 3-2, in overtime during Fridays BIG EAST Conference Tournament semifinals. Played under occasional showers, the loss drops Connecticut to 15-3-2 on the year, while Seton Hall improved to 13-6-0.
Only 2:21 into the contest, Seton Halls Greg Strohmann began the night with an assist from Luke Vercollone. UConns Lindon Pecorelli (Fr., LaCrescenta, CA) knotted things at one a piece at the 12:29 mark off a feed from Darin Lewis (Sr., Tunapuna, Trinidad). It was then 2000 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, Chris Gbandi (Jr, Houston, TX), gave Connecticut the go-ahead score at 34:38, as UConn led at intermission, 2-1. As they had at the start of the game, Seton Hall looked again to Strohmann for the equalizer at 59:24. In the overtime period, the Pirates Torsten Knor received the ball in front of the left post and knocked in a slow paced shot, which got past UConn goal keeper, Bryheem Hancock (Jr., Middletown, DE).
The UConn-Seton Hall match was the first of two semifinal games held Friday. Seton Hall now awaits the outcome of the second, which features No. 3 seed Boston College (10- 6-1) and No. 7 seed Rutgers (10-8-1). UConn awaits the unveiling of the 2000 NCAA Division I Mens Soccer Championship bracket, which will be announced Monday, Nov. 13, from 3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. ET from Indianapolis, IN.
