Storrs, CT (Nov. 1, 2000) -- For the tenth time this season, the University of Connecticut volleyball team posted a 3-0 shutout win as it downed Rhode Island Wednesday night (15-8, 15-5, 15-7). The win improved UConns record to 15-11 and 4-4 in the BIG EAST, while Rhode Island, whose losing skid extended to five matches, is now 4-18 and 3-6 in Atlantic-10 play.
Even though the match only went to three games, Stephanie Schindel (Sr., OH, Diamond Bar, CA) made it nine straight double-doubles and 16 on the year with 17 kills and 12 digs. Playing a major role in UConns .315 attack percentage average was Janice Dykema (So., MH, Kalamazoo, MI) as she tallied 11 kills for a .769 attack average. The combined team average ranks as its fifth best total on the year. Maria Shaker (Jr., S, Fairview Park, Ohio) continued to see the majority of the time at setter with 29 assists on the night.
Connecticut returns to the road Saturday, Nov. 4, with a trip to Washington D.C., to face Georgetown at 5 p.m. The match up will be a critical one, as UConn will need a victory to reenter the race for a BIG EAST Conference Tournament slot. The Hoyas are ahead in the series, 13-4, and feature standout freshman setter Jennifer Ward. On the season, Ward has garnered BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors four times.
