Storrs, CT - For the second time in as many days the University of Connecticut volleyball team went to a deciding match as they came up short as the Huskies fell to Notre Dame, 3-2, on Oct. 29 (11-15, 15-11, 5-15, 15-13, 14-16). The Irish, who entered the contest ranked 21st in the latest AVCA poll, improved to 18-5 on the year and 8-0 in the conference, while UConn falls to 14-11 and 4-4 in league play. As a team the Huskies recorded 75 assists, the highest total on the 2000 season.
Stephanie Schindel (Sr., OH, Diamond Bar, CA) made it eight straight double-doubles and 15 on the year with 23 kills and 11 digs. Her 23 kills is the most of any UConn athlete this season and was just two off her career high (25, Indiana, 9/10/99). Schindel's 11 digs also led the squad in the category. Maria Shaker (Jr., S, Fairview Park, Ohio) recorded the majority of UConn's aforementioned 75 assists as she tallied 46. The total ranks as her third highest this season. Christine Lambert (So., MH, Lancaster, CA) helped to lead the defensive effort as she matched her career high with 12 blocks.
The Huskies four match home stand continues on Nov. 1, as they host to Rhode Island at 7:30 p.m. in Gampel Pavilion. Although series history is in support of the Rams, 3-14, the two teams have only squared off once during UConn head coach Kelli Myers' career. The meeting, UConn's 1999 season opener, was a 3-2 Husky win.
