Storrs, CT - For the first time on the 2000 season, the University of Connecticut women's volleyball team pushed a match to a deciding game on its home floor on Oct. 27, as the Huskies were defeated by Syracuse (11-15, 15-7, 13-15, 15-1, 14-16). The loss drops the Huskies 14-10 on the year and 4-3 in BIG EAST play, while the Orangewomen improved to 21- 8 and 4-3.
For the seventh-straight match and the 14th time on the season, Stephanie Schindel (Sr., OH, Diamond Bar, CA) earned a double-double with 16 kills and 12 digs. Her 12 digs tied with Laura Wooley (Fr., OH, Ridgecrest, CA) and Stephanie Ziemann (So., OH, Linden, CA) to lead the defense. Wooley also recorded a double-double, the fourth of her career, as she also had 13 kills. Melissa Wooley (So., OH, Ridgecrest, CA) and Janice Dykema (So., MH, Kalamazoo) ran the UConn offense as they both had 18 kills. Dykema's .552 attack percentage is her second best mark on the year. Maria Shaker (Jr., S, Fairview Park, Ohio), who over the last three matches has become Connecticut's primary setter, notched 55 on the afternoon.
UConn is back in action on Oct. 29, as they play host to BIG EAST leader, Notre Dame. The Irish enter the contest with a spotless 6-0 record in the league and ranked 21st in the latest AVCA poll. Since the Irish joined the league in 1995 they have only lost two conference tilts. Notable, as it was UConn that handed Notre Dame the first of the two, a 3-2 Connecticut victory on Oct. 9, 1998, in Storrs, CT.
