Boston, MA (Oct. 27) - For the second consecutive season, the men's cross country team finished seventh at the BIG EAST Conference Championships on Oct. 27 in Boston, MA. The UConn harriers combined for 213 points in the 8,000 meter race, which was won by Providence who tallied 39 as the Friars entered the meet as the fourth-ranked team in the country.
Dan Wilson (Sr., West Haven, CT) continued to make strides towards advancing to the NCAA Championships, as he garnered All-BIG EAST honors with a sixth place time of 23:44. In each of the three meets Wilson has participated in on the year, his times have lowered considerably with his latest time erasing 27 seconds off his last outing (10/13, 24:11, New England Championships). Following Wilson was Eric Fleckenstein (Fr., Port Jefferson, NY), who turned in a 41st place performance behind a time of 25:15, while Michael Hall (So., Washington, CT) clocked a 25:27 to come in at 46th. Hall's time stands as his best on the 2000 season. Pat McMahon (Jr., Wallingford, CT) also ran a season low, 25:51, for 59th, while Ken Goglas closed out Connecticut's scoring with a 25:56, just one second off his personal record, for 61st.
Next up, the Huskies travel to Bronx, NY for the NCAA Northeast Regionals on Nov. 11. The meet will serve as a qualifier for the NCAA Championships, which are set to be held Nov. 22 in Ames, IA. A total of 255 competitors will qualify or be selected. Thirteen teams will be chosen at large Nov. 13. The remainder of the field advances through one of the nine regional competitions. The Huskies ran to a 16th place finish in the 33-team field at the NCAA District I Regionals held at Franklin Park, in Boston, MA, a year ago.
