Massachusetts Edges Connecticut Volleyball In Five

AMHERST, MA (Oct. 17) -- For the second time in as many outings the University of Connecticut womens volleyball team extended a match to five games as it was defeated by UMass Oct. 17 (6-15, 15- 8, 7-15, 17-15, 11-15). The loss to the minutewomen is the first for the Huskies under head coach Kelli Myers, however, UConn still holds the advantage in the series, 13-9.
Stephanie Schindel (So., OH, Diamond Bar, CA) and Machel Craig (Sr., OH, Houston, TX) both recorded double-doubles with Schindel collecting a team high 18 kills and 12 digs, while Craig guided the defense with 18 digs and 10 kills. The double-double for Schindel marked her third-straight and ninth on the season. Craigs was the second in 2000 as her total digs (18) snapped her career high in the category, 14, which she has posted on two occasions. Julie Erbez (Fr., S, Stockton, CA) and Maria Shaker (Jr., S, Fairview Park, Ohio) split time at the setter position as Erbez tallied 39 of UConns 56 assists, while Shaker accounted for 14.
Next up the Huskies resume BIG EAST play as they travel to Pittsburgh, PA, to face Pittsburgh Friday, Oct. 20. Despite the fact that the Panthers lead the series 8-4, UConn owns a two game win streak against Pitt.
